I spent time working on a secret project yesterday. Despite starting late and having a bunch of other distractions, I still managed close to 7000 words.
As a result of this and other drama not directly involving me, I didn’t get a lot else done. Not that 7000 words isn’t a lot.
I’ve got a busy few days ahead of me. I’ve got a lot of work to do and as a result, I’m focused on that, and most of it I can’t and may never be able to talk about. It’s all good though.
I’ve been so busy I’ve not even had time to think about other things. My plan is to have my next novel ready to start writing on 1st November. I’m not planning for it to be a NaNo novel as such as I think it’ll take longer than that. I’m very much at the ideas phase, which pretty much means I sit it at the back of my brain, where it will slowly work subconsciously until either it pops an idea into my head or I bring it forward and start outlining that. That may happen next week.
I’d like it to be a fast first draft. They never seem to be. I’ve definitely picked up my daily rate, even if fiction is still a solid 1500 words per hour. I just manage to squeeze in more writing sessions per day.
However, I do think 5000 words a day is around my limit (depending on having the time). I can do more, but I physically feel it the next day. 5000 is still better than a few months ago when I struggled doing a thousand.
Progress is progress, so I’m hoping that maybe I can improve it further. However to do that I think I need to make some physical changes.
First, I need to learn to touch type. That’s going to take time and whilst it will be worth the investment, it’s something that will eat into my writing rate for a long period of time. When can I afford the time to dedicate to this?
I also need to break the habit of backspacing. I blame wearing varifocals but I find I’m not as accurate at key presses on the side of my bad eye. I’ll hit the key next to the intended one, or in the case of apostrophe, hit the semi colon (EVERY BLOODY TIME). And instead of editing, I’ll delete half a sentence to rewrite it, and make a further two errors in the process.
Next, I think I need to change my keyboard. When I’m four finger typing fast and hit the space bar, it sometimes doesn’t register until after I’ve hit the next key, meaning that my spaces sometimes are really random.
I think I sit too close to the keyboard as well at times, which causes some of these problems.
Is it worth making those changes and would it make a huge difference? I’m not sure, and to be honest, I don’t think I have the time to find out?
