Tuesday 3rd August 2021

I’m on a bit of a mission.

Yesterday was a productive day.  I got loads done, wrote a lot and moved a load of big projects forward.  Yet, as predicted, today was a totally unproductive day.

I’ve tried to establish why this happens.  Sometimes, if you have a long list of task, you can cherry pick the easy ones on the first day, leaving you with the harder ones on the second.  Likewise with writing, you could go into day 1 of a very clear view of what the next couple of scenes need to look like, but get to the second day and be less sure.

But, in terms of set up, today was just like yesterday.  Equal level of complexity in tasks, scenes to be written as clear as yesterday, and yet I didn’t perform quite as well.

I want to know why.

Yes, one busy day could leave you drained for the next, but it wasn’t that.  I had the energy to do things, I just didn’t have the motivation.  The tasks I had to do were equal in importance so I felt just as much need to get those done as the ones yesterday.  I woke up (for a decent sleep) wanting to be as productive.

I’ve very careful to balance my energy levels.  My mobius strip of productivity is designed so that I don’t burn out over a short period of time.  I do a bit of writing, do some things in a game, and they cycle round again.  I can’t do that for months and months but it’ll work long enough to write a book or complete a project over a number of months.

So what caused yesterday’s drop off?  Sleep was similar, so the only physical thing I can think of is nutrition which if it is, is massive.

But loads of people tell me they can’t have two productive days in a row.  I get that we’re not machines and we’re impacted by numerous external factors that can impact our productivity, but even when everything is identical there can be a massive difference.

I briefly looked at biorhythms to see whether there is any science that points to a 48 hour cycle.  But aside from circadian rhythms, everything is pretty much pseudo-science.

There’s got to be something there though.  It has me fascinated, and whilst I did manage to squeeze out some more scenes in my First Draft, I don’t feel today as been a success in the same way yesterday was.
