As the heatwave continues so I’m finding it a struggle to get things done. I’m not sleeping as much as normal, and hence I feel the urge to take a break and go for a lay down. It’s too hot to do anything that takes massive amounts of concentration, it’s too hot to sleep.
Hence I’ve had a day where I’ll get little things done, then need a rest. Then go back to things.
There were a few positives about the day. I FINALLY got the backlog of The Climb done. All four months posted. That’s taken a lot of time over the last couple of weeks so I’m glad to have it done and free up that time for something else.
Secondly, I did manage to get 2000 words on The Accursed. I do feel like I’m writing myself into a corner, as whilst I’m following the outline, I’m putting all these extra little obstacles in the way of my characters on their way from A to B. Obstacles are good in a story… but then I need to come up with a way for them to get past them… which is where I feel I’m writing myself into a corner.
Still, 2000 words is 2000 words and it’s not like I’ve gone off-track or anything. I suspect that section will be heavily edited in the second draft.
I’ve also been thinking about The First Draft. I need to do a livestream of a brainstorming session very soon because I’ve started to have a few ideas.
One of those is that, because this isn’t going to be a traditionally published project, I can go a bit more cross-genre. The web serial format gives me the chance to do things that I wouldn’t otherwise, so I’m gravitating towards those things, if only to make that differentiation for myself. I always had the concept that The First Draft would relate to a bunch of conscripts (as well as being a reference to the fact that this is the raw story on the page) but now I have an idea of what they are being conscripted for.
The plan is to do a couple of livestreams where I break this down and show how I come up with the decisions I make. I’ll then livestream the writing of the serial. I’m quite excited about this project. I just don’t want it to take over from other projects.
It was also Warcraft Wednesday today so I did my dailies and weeklies and then this evening did a couple of mythic dungeons. I quite enjoy them so hopefully I can continue to do them if time allows. (I have a bit of free time this week)
So all in all, not too bad a day in terms of output but it’s felt far from productive and I look forward to it cooling a little so my sleep can get closer to normal, and hopefully with it, my productivity during the day.
