After having completed the Detailed Outline, I’ve now thrown myself back into The Accursed. The word count wasn’t the best but for a first day back on it, it was decent.
Best of all, it felt fun. I’m starting to get a feel for these characters.
I often find the fun in a story in the gaps between characters. I know these are products of my own imagination, but when I find myself thinking of things that happened off page, like my own form of fan fiction, that’s when I know when a character is working.
I suspect the characters have changed a little since I was last working on the book, but that’s fine. This is a first draft and I want them to grow and change a little as I write.
The plan is to build up the writing over the next few weeks and get the first draft of this book done.
I’m also thinking of future stories. I have one where I have a concept but need to start outlining it at some point. And I have the beginnings of a third where I have an idea of a character but nothing more.
Something that’s definitely helped me is building myself an overarching magic structure. It’s not a magic system but more a structure for me to build those structures. It’s currently allowing me to go into a story very early on and ask what the magic system is and how does it work, and be able to build something. I developed it for The Accursed and I’ve found it helpful when thinking about these two additional books.
I have no plans to outline them just yet. I’m content to let both of these sit and bubble away while I work on The Accursed. This story was put together very rapidly and as such I do worry about depth (depth of character, depth of story, depth of worldbuilding) as I’ve not had chance to really mine the story.
But, returning to it, I feel good about the book which is a good sign. I now just want to ramp up my writing in the coming weeks and… have fun with it.
It sounds stupid, but publishing can sometimes be such stress it’s easy to fall into the trap of ticking boxes, whether they be ones set by current marketing conditions, or ones you place on yourself to ensure you are staying true to you. I really like the idea of letting go and having the confidence to just let the story take me. If the outline is good, it’ll be effortless to follow it. It’s be like a series of streetlamps lighting the road ahead as I speed along.
I already know how the next chapter will start (even though I need to finish off a paragraph on the current one). That’s good and I’m pleased how effortlessly I’ve slipped back into this story.
Let’s hope it continues!
