I’m stressed out about the desktop to the point I’m having a mini-meltdown.
I’d hoped that getting a new graphics card would resolve the problem. It did not. That means I wasted £400 and still do not have a working computer. The people I bought it from are bastards. They only offer a 2 year warranty and then only offer a time and labour service. Most of the parts have a 3 year manufacturer guarantee. And to top that off, to ship it to them cost a fortune by courier, and it gets loads more when you add on insurance for the value of the computer (because let’s not forget that couriers lose things all the time).
After all the drama of trying to get my Twitter account back, I’m a little emotionally spent. Yes, there are glaring holes in the Sale of Goods act here, but do I have the energy for that fight? Especially so soon after fighting for my unjust Twitter suspension (which ended up getting government ministers involved to get it resolved).
The other option is to find someone local and get them to diagnose and swap out parts (probably a motherboard). More money, probably less stress.
As a result, I’m just spent today.
My plan was that as soon as I got my Twitter back, I could launch these new projects. But all of them need video editing, and all the clips and editing software are on the desktop.
I suppose I’m lucky. My core work is synced between a number of computers meaning I could jump straight on the gaming laptop and pick up writing where I left off. If this was a disaster recovery test (which it essentially was) then the writing element worked flawlessly.
What didn’t work was my video content. That’s secondary currently (and I’m still putting it together) and so does not have the same level of backup. Also, all my backlog of The Climb thumbnails was not on a synced drive and now needs to be. But other than that… I came out able to carry on working.
But, I really miss a second screen. Whereas I would normally watch something on one screen, and make notes on another, I only have the one screen. I suppose I could connected up a second monitor, but they still wouldn’t be side to side.
For a short term thing, the laptop works fine. It’s a perfect mobile solution for when I’m going away or have a few days away from a desktop… but as it goes into weeks, it becomes more frustrating.
As a result, I just burnt all my mental energy on this thing today. I’m upset it’s so difficult, I’m angry that the company isn’t working in entirely good faith (never buying a machine from them again), I’m pissed at the money I’ve wasted, and the unknown cost going forwards. I want my desktop back and it feels like I’ve made no progress.
I need to just step away and relax for a long weekend.
So I’ve done that today… building a pretty cool windmill in Minecraft for no other reason than to see if I could. I’m pretty impressed at how good it looks. It took me hours but it was worth the effort.
The PC issues can wait until Monday when I have more energy.
