Most people get days like today and spend it all outside. But I wilt in the heat and burn in the sun. I swear I must have at least part vampire in my heritage as the hot sunny day is my worst nightmare.
I like it warm enough to wear a T-Shirt, and enough of a breeze to keep you cool, together with just enough cloud to stay sunny without the sun beating down on you.
So what do I do on days like today? I write.
I managed over 3000 words today and I’m quite pleased with that. I’m still roughly following the plan I did a couple of days ago, but it’s grown a bit in the telling. Jeez, is this novel going to need a lot of work in draft two.
The important thing is that it’s getting done. My target for this week was to get to 65,000 words. I’m just short of 60k, which isn’t bad considering I had a few bad days.
I’m starting to think that days off are bad. As much as I am more than capable to write after a few days break, I have noticed that ramping up the word count takes a bit of consistency. The first 500 words after a break seemed to take as long as 1500, and the day tally was very low. That’s built up over the last few days to the stage where I’m happy where I am.
And the main reason: I’m too hot to do anything else.
Tomorrow I have to write a rescue, and at the end of the day, this is what’s now occupying my mind. How am I going to do this in a way that feels cool and original? I’m currently not sure, but I don’t want to get up tomorrow and find my progress stifled because I’m not entirely sure what to write.
So for the rest of the evening, the plan is to play a few games whilst mulling over it in my mind. If I can find some cool angle, I’ll be keen to write it tomorrow and should hopefully turn out a decent number of words.
Of course, the risk is that I don’t, in which case it might be a very low word count day as I wade through the story ahead of me. And if that happens will that drop my daily progress rate right back down again?
Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter than today, so I can be pretty sure that even if I don’t get the number of words out, I should have a lot of writing sessions throughout the day.
Why can’t I be like normal writers and write in the winter?
