You know what makes a good day?  When you sit down to write your neverending Epic Fantasy novel, get into a real flow, despite having written quite a bit already today, and then look up to find you’ve written over 2500 words in a single session.

My total for the day was around 5000 and I’m quite pleased.  As much as I’d like a 10,000 word day, I think 5000 is around my limit before there’s a danger of quality slipping.  Although, that said, doing those sorts of numbers in a session  late in the day might mean I can push it further.

I’m helped by several things.

Last week was a slow week.  A combination of focusing on other things I needed to do around the house, together with hitting my usual third act slump, meant I spent a week away from writing The Accursed.

However, despite not writing, my mind was obviously going.  I find I need to be a couple of scenes ahead of my writing.  That way, I always have a clear idea of where the story is heading.  Ordinarily, I’d plan these out with a few bullet points to plot out the chapter arc.  I’ve not done this on this novel, and instead have a big overarcing plan with which I can guide my novel forwards, a couple of scenes ahead at a time.

But together it’s meant that I’ve come into this week with a lot of scenes formulated.  It helps that it’s a big action piece with loads of characters.  I’m not entirely sure how many scenes I have, but today I was able to jump from one straight into another without even stopping, and I have at least another 5 or so plotted out in my head.

Yes, I should write these down.  No, I won’t.  Sue me.

I’m also working on a couple of other things.  One is a TV script.  I said I wanted to write a script for fun each quarter, and the latest quarter finishes this week.  However, my motivation is a competition.  There seems to be a lot of scriptwriting competitions.  I avoid any with any sort of entrance fee.  I also don’t go into them expecting anything other than a deadline.  And it just so happens that this script is for a competition which conveniently ends on Friday.

I’m slow at scriptwriting.  This is part fun, part learning the craft.  I’m seriously starting to worry if I’ll get the script done in time.  I’m always hearing about people who sit down and write a script in 10 hours despite no experience.  Why does that never happen for me?

I also have a couple of other projects I’m trying to tick along.

The idea is to get a few of them finished off in the next few months.  I’m a little anxious for a few completed drafts under my belt and as such, it motivated me to have the big push this week.

Still, even with 5000 words written today, I doubt it’ll put a huge dent into my current writing slate.

But I’ll take a day where the words come easy and I do 5000 words any day.  I just wish every day could be like this.  It probably means I’ll have a crap day tomorrow.

Let’s see.
