I don’t know where it’s come from but today I was hit by a sudden burst of productivity.
I have a few projects on the go right now: The first draft of the accursed, revisions to the outline for Powered (which got added to the table this week).
These are enough to keep me busy. But with the arrival of a new mic that replaces the one that went wrong in December, I want to do some Warcraft videos. I have a Warcraft focused second Youttube channel but so far I’ve just stuck dumps of my livestream on there.
I want to start producing content based on my in-game adventures. Not so much RP-based, but more focused on what I discover as I play.
I’ve been planning some writing videos for the last few months but the lack of a decent mic put me off. Now I’ve got a fantastic mic, I want to start doing some videos on productivity and tools as they relate to writing.
For example, I use Notion for a lot of my notes. I use it to keep weekly planners, writing metrics, planned writing projects, social media plans, video ideas. I recently started keep a daily log, which basically listed my hours and where the focus was at the time. The idea is that it helps me spot dead time. It also fits nicely into the way my goals are split from a yearly focus into Quarterly, then monthly, then weekly.
I did some work to physically link it in with relational databases that means as part of my review process, goals can filter down and now feedback can filter up. Whilst I’m not trying to eliminate dead time, it’s been good to see how much of it and where it happens.
But this week, I expanded it. My metric database was a separate calendar, but I did some work to link it into my daily log, and now it not only reports my daily writing and editing stats into my daily log, but it filters up to automatically give me weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly totals.
It was complicated to build, and it’s totally bespoke, but I’m sure some people would like to see how I did it, hence the idea for the channel.
I also want to do The First Draft. As a concept I like it, and I can see a lot of opportunity with it. The idea would be to go weekly rather than my original idea of daily. This one doesn’t have Youtube content, but I like the idea of livestreaming the writing of it.
The best part is that the cadence for these ideas is weekly. Having done videos for c, I think doing this week to week won’t be to time consuming, so long as I invest a bit of time at the beginning doing a lot of setup.
I ended up writing a ton of things I need to do into my task list. It’s a massive list.
Will the appeal wear off over the next few days? Possibly. I’m very, very aware, that this has to be secondary to all the writing and I have two writing projects on the go. But at the same time, I think that I could batch a load of videos, use templates I’ve taken the time to build and get 6 done in an afternoon. They can then be scheduled for the next 6 weeks.
They all need a bit of setup. First were logos. If I’m producing a lot of different content I want them to be easy to differentiate between each other. I want viewers to come to my website and say: that’s The Climb, that’s The First Draft, and so on. I got some of those done today. The productivity one needs redoing though, because it doesn’t work as a template that can be reused easily.
The next task is doing intro templates in various different sizes so they could theoretically be used for different types of social media. Might never need them all for all platforms but the idea behind a lot of this is to have all the setup done.
I’m still wondering where this sudden bout of creativity has come from and whether it’s just a rare spike of motivation. I suspect now teaching at Fightcamp has made me realise that the world isn’t on hold any more, and given me a focus away from the present and to the future.
Still gotta get those books written though. You can bet I’m going to be monitoring my word count closely over the coming weeks.
