This week I’m back on the words, and today’s focus has been on word count. Now, let me stress that word count isn’t everything when it comes to writing. It’s perfectly legitimate to sit around thinking. Indeed, working on new stories back in the Spring, a lot of the time my word count was almost non-existent.
But I have a stupid number of projects on the go, to which I’ve just added a script I want to write this week.
So this week is very much about word count.
After a bit of a break, I always struggle with words. I don’t feel so much that I’m swimming in the direction I want to go, or even being carried by the current. Instead I’m constantly being dashed against rocks. It gets better, but it’ll take a few days.
I did over 4000 words today, which is good for a first day back on it. However, I’m not sure they are good words. They progress my projects and they can be fixed in the editing, but I did have to fight that internal feeling that what I was doing wasn’t very good.
I’m hoping that as the week goes on, so my quality will improve, and my word count up. I want to get projects done rather than constantly take on new ones. I work well when I have things I can swap between. However, I’m concerned it helps only word count and not quality.
I am rather jealous of those people who can come up with an idea for a story or script and write it in a couple of days. One day I’ll learn that art. But for now, I need to work in sprints. I need to know what I’m writing before I sit down to type.
That’s been proved today with The Accursed. I have a big battle looming. I have everything in place for everyone to distrust everyone else and for it to be a complete fictional clusterfuck. But I have no plan how I’m going to do this on the page. Instead, I just wrote a few scenes as if I was discovering the story rather than planning it.
I know I’m moving from the second act into the third, and as such that’s a point where I’m most lost with the story. I’ve told myself it’s no wonder I’m doubting myself and this novel. It’s at that stage where it feels all over the place and I question whether I can guide it home.
But even so, I do think this novel will need a ridiculous amount of editing. It all feels pretty daunting for now.
But, if I can get a good week in, maybe I can get further into the third act and alleviate some of my worries. Let’s see how my word count is doing on Friday.
