I should be getting the desktop back tomorrow, and with it, I can kick some plans into high gear.
I had been planning to launch a couple of YouTube series. I’d done a lot of the prep work, producing intros and the like. That should have allowed me to have a pipeline where I could get the videos out quite quickly.
The problem was that a lot of my video files were on the Desktop and not synced like my writing is.
In many ways, I’ve been really pleased by how easy it was to switch to the laptop and not lose any novel work. However, there have been gaps. I had a surplus of The Climb thumbnails but they weren’t in a synced folder, meaning that I’ve had to actively gather new ones. With my recent trips I now have enough once combined that I won’t need to do any for a good year or so, but I will need to move everything across to a new folder and spent a good half day to sort out the ones I’ve created on the laptop with my backlog and the new photos I took.
My biggest issue has been screens.
I work with a couple of applications and a number of tabs. I have to remember when I can alt-tab and when I just need to switch to a different browser tab. Not the biggest worry I know but it gets frustrating when I’m constantly switching between apps.
I’ve recently connected up a second monitor but mousing from one to the other isn’t natural as my laptop screen is in front the monitor rather than beside it.
It’s allowed me to start taking notes again though. One of my favourite methods of learning is to have the video open on one screen and then Notion open on another as I type up my notes. I’m currently listening to the audiobook of Atomic Habits by James Clear and have been taking a lot of notes as I’m convinced I need a bespoke habits tracker. Not having to alt-tab to find the pause button has made it possible to do so.
I’ve also started a year long workshop on Comics Writing, and was able to take notes while the presenter talked on zoom.
I suspect when the computer comes back, all I’m going to want to do is turn on ray tracing and try out a few games, but I’ll make a start on the thumbnails, with a view to getting all the video content good to go for 1st September. That gives me less than a week but everything was literally ready to go when the desktop died.
It’ll be good to have the machine back.
