I got a new mount today.

With the release of World of Warcraft patch 9.1 there’s a new event that happens every 2 hours.  Basically, a random area spawns elites.  If you head over there you can begin taking down the mobs that spawn to fill up a progress bar.  Get that to 100% and a boss will spawn.  Take that boss down to finish the event.

On your first attempt each week, you can loot a treasure box, which has the chance to drop an awesome new hand mount.  It’s like something from the Addams family but in the form of a mount.

The trouble is that the mount has 1% drop rate, and you can only do it once a week.  That means for a player with a single character, it would take about 2 years to get the mount.

But I, having done a load of work, have 15, and so that 2 year grind becomes closer to 8 weeks.

And so, every 2 hours I’ve been dropping everything and taking a new character into the zone, and dashed them over to the event while loads of people are doing it and I’m not expected to do a load of damage.

I got it after about 8 – 10 tries.  In theory that should have been after 10 weeks.

This is a reminder as to why I have all these alts.  Originally it was so I could run old raid content and get the 1% mount drops from there, but as I level them up and have them close to current in terms of gear, so I can run the latest content and be amongst the first to get these new mounts.

I’ve continued to progress the alts.  Whilst I can skip the intro quests to the new patch, saving me about 5 hours a character, I do still have to do some quests to unlock the new rep.

It’s not so much that I want to max that rep, as that you gain a lot of items to hand in as part of the new zone.  And you can’t hand it in, until you’ve unlocked it all.  And on a ilevel 130 character in a zone designed for ilevel 170+, it’s slow and tough and a lot of deaths.

So I’ve been trying to do it while there are a lot of other players around and the areas are busy, allowing me to tag mobs.  I’m finding it’s taking me about an hour an alt, which when you add in daily quests and the two hourly event, makes progress slow.

I’d like to get them all done by tomorrow.  I’d given myself a few days off to just play Warcraft but I’d hoped coming into this to be done before the weekend.  Now it looks like it’ll take me the weekend as well.

Still, once it’s done, I’ll have all characters up to current level.  I can then dip in and out and shuffle gear.  Whereas 9.0 saw me having a slow grind to level up all my characters and get their professions maxed, the real work now is in the opening weeks.  Then I can slowly dip in and out as I see fit.

It’s a lot of work upfront, but I’m enjoying the fact I’m staying current with the content, rather than spending the last patch trying to do all the things I should have done.
