Sunday 6th June 2021

As I’ve previously reported, I’ve fallen a little out of love with Pokemon Go over the last year.  A combination of lockdown and bad corporate choices means I dip into the game…. which all things considered is a bit healthier.  I do the research and events but with a lot of the community angle now gone for me, some of the joy has gone.

As a result, Community Days are usually annoyances, where I’ll play for a few hours to do the research (yeah, I still buy those) and get a few shinies, but I’m done after that.

It’s not been helped by the community day pokemon being pretty crap.  I know some people get excited about the community day move, but it’s usually for PvP and I much prefer PvE.  So, even doing it, and getting one in case I need it for a Silph Road tournament, there’s little to excite me about the pokemon and the day.

However, today was Gible.

Gible is one of those rare Pokemon.  I find them pretty good and because of their combination of elusiveness and usefulness, it’s one I want to get a good one of.  Even if I get a crap one, I keep it to trade with others in the hope of a good trade or a lucky.  I’ve got a perfect IV one doing this.

So, not since Tyanitar or Metagross have I been so excited about a community day.  I want an army of the things.

I’ve been building ball supplies over the last couple of weeks, and as luck would have it, Niantic announced a bag upgrade allowing me to catch everything and then keep to trade with another PoGo player in the hope of some really good luckies.

I played solidly across the whole event.  I’ve not played PoGo like that for years.  I didn’t care whether others were interested in this one or not, this one was special for me and the way I play.

And I burned through all of my Pokeballs.  I destroyed my pinap berries and most of my silver pinaps as well.  Despite resupplies and opening gifts, I was down 750 items in my item bag by the end of the event.

And I got some good ones.  Some from trading and going lucky, some from catching.  I also already had a 98 unevolved waiting for a day like this (I have a 100% but I plan to use a charged tm to add a second move).

At the end of community day, Niantic gives players a further 2 hours to evolve.  Normally I’m done before the event is over, but today I used those entire two hours, trying to get more luckies and high IV Gibles from trades.

Of course, hunched over a mobile all day, even if sat down and using incense, means my back is going to kill me tomorrow, but it was worth it.

I’ve still got more to trade which I plan to do over the next week, the idea being that when the December community day rolls round I hopefully have a further one or two I can then evolve for an even greater army.

Although it did feel like a grind, this has been the most fun I’ve had in PoGo in over a year.  I hope this signals the start of future good community days.  Maybe as everyone gets vaccinated and things get back to normal we can return to how we used to play pre-pandemic.
