Monday 2nd August 2021

Mondays always seem to be my most productive day of the week.  Having moved all my end of week admin to Sundays, it now means I can hit the week running, trying to cross off as many tasks as possible.

I tend to slow down as the week progresses.  There’s something about all those tasks I didn’t get time to do earlier in the week, that seems to overwhelm me and somehow leave me feeling less motivated.  I’ve come to accept it.  I’ll be better doing the big one–off tasks at the beginning of the week, sinking into more ongoing work, like novel writing, as the week reaches its end.

I still managed to squeeze in two writing sessions today though.  That’s another 3000 words on the novel today, and because – as we all know – word count is happiness, today was a good day.

But even if I hadn’t got that second session in, I moved a lot of big tasks forward.  My secret?  My old friend, the mobius strip of productivity.

I’ll do a big task and be left feeling a little drained by it, and so dive into Warcraft.  It’s Darkmoon Faire this week, which means only one thing:  profession upgrades.  I discovered recently that if you’ve maxed your professions in the latest expansion, the monthly quest will go back to whatever expansion you’ve yet to max, and offer you an upgrade for your profession in that expansion.  So despite having all my Shadowlands professions maxed, I am able to use it to progress BFA and Legion professions.

I’ll do two characters, and then jump back into work, trying to make sure that something worthwhile had progress each and every hour.  So I not only progressed my broken PC, I progressed Twitter, I did two writing sessions, I got some housework done.

Typically, a productive day usually means the next day is rubbish.  That’s usually because a good day will have meant a good writing session which, in turn, will mean I won’t know what to write the next day and, therefore, will drag the whole day down.  However, I had a reunion between two characters today, so there’s a lot to write tomorrow.

Likewise, the PC builders want me to try to reseat some components in my PC to see if it fixes my problem.

I also have two other projects on the go.  One interactive, and a movie script I want to write this month.  I saw someone challenged themselves to write a script every month, and I want to try and do one every quarter.  I have a rough idea, but I need to start to plot it all out.

Having a project that’s purely for me to practise is nice and could be a good pallet cleanser if Warcraft is off the table for some reason or other.

So all in all, I have no reason to be unproductive the rest of this week.  I know what to write, I have plenty of other things to write, and if I get bored, there’s still a few more characters I need to take through Darkmoon Faire.
