Today was a good day. After 5 months, we finally downed Heroic Sire Denathrius in World of Warcraft.
It’s been quite a journey and it took us around 120 attempts before we finally managed to do it. And I’ve loved it.
I used to raid between Wrath of the Lich King and Mists of Pandaria, but then HEMA happened and the nights clashed and as a result, I dropped out it. A couple of my friends from that time continued and it was only through them seeing me playing a lot of Warcraft through the pandemic that they suggested that I join them back at the end of last year.
As frustrating as it can me (and believe me the last few weeks have been super frustrating), I love the teamwork needed to take down these bosses. One person fails and it’s like a stack of cards falling over.
It’s taken skill and I was nervous at taking on a different raiding main from the usual Death Knight. But I’ve slowly learnt the class and become more confident with it to the point that I survived the entire encounter until the very last blow.
I’d started the day with a bit of Geocaching. I went to another area near me with the aim of trying a couple that are there. For a time it looked like I’d get none, but I went back to the first and ended up finding it. I’m so rusty.
As a result I was feeling tired come the fight. It’s so complicated, but then it’s the last boss so I guess you should expect that. We’d changed some things around in the first phase to help the healers last week and I still wasn’t sure of those changes.
Weirdly it’s not a DPS fight. There’s a lot of mechanics that mean my AOE-style class was really best keeping out the way until we got adds in stage 1, or my mobility was an advantage in stage 3. For phase 2, I spent a lot of time not doing any damage.
Of course, to get to stage 3, you need to get through stage 1 and 2. The group had perfected stage 1, even with the change, but some were still dying off in stage 2. I just focused on staying alive.
With stage 3, I soon learnt that my mobility was key. I put my fel rush back on my main toolbar and then used this to get in damage the boss and get out again to help soak the stage 3 orbs. It took a bit of practise but after last week where we got him down to 0.8% a kill was on the cards if we could get enough people into stage 3.
In many ways, I’m thankful that 9.0 has been such a long patch cycle. 9.1 will see a new raid and it would have been demoralising to have not got 9.0 done. That’s still a few months off so I expect a lot of people will drop out the game for some time, but I intend to keep raiding if only to better learn my class.
The pressure’s off now which is great, but the big question is whether I finish leveling up my Death Knight alt ready for raiding in 9.1?
