I’ve been feeling a bit flat the last couple of days. It’s been a mix of ongoing pandemic anxiety coupled with boredom. I’m done with this pandemic now, but I’m not sure what I’d do if it was safe to mingle.
So today’s plan was to curl up on the support bubble sofa and read comics all day. Given the work I’ve been doing, that’s probably not an unproductive use of my time, but I really didn’t have the mental energy for anything else.
I recently found a Youtube channel that goes through all the major comics events and goes into detail about them. I’ve watched them on series I’ve read as well as ones I haven’t, and some of them stretch to four hours. I usually have them on in the background while I play Warcraft.
I’ve just started on the House of X that’s 3 hours long. It makes me really want to read that series, and given that I have Marvel Unlimited, I could do. It sounds like one of those series that people will refer back to in ten years time.
However, I’m doing a Marvel Universe read. I started at Avengers Dissassembled and the idea is to read every Marvel universe comic in chronological order going forwards. It’ll take me years, and I kinda like that. And whilst I’ve not yet reached House of M yet, it’s a project that I’ve made good progress on, currently reading the origin of the Winter Soldier.
The reason I went so far back is that I wanted to capture all the modern comics events. Avengers Dissassembled was the first big comics crossover event and whilst they now seems a bit gimmicky, it’s obvious from watching that House of X video, good ones still exist.
And given that the Marvel chronology is a little dicey in places, I like the idea that my reading has been given a bit of time to have the chronology be agreed. Even so, I still find mistakes.
And beside, I like it that the next stage might be a mini-series or 14 episodes of a certain comic. It gives me mini targets to keep the challenge fresh, and not make things too confusing by having to juggle multiple storylines in my head.
I would have read more but my eyes tired out. Still, I made some good progress and I like I can dip in and out of it whenever I want. I look forward to reaching House of M as my second big event. I’ve read it before but in many ways it feels like I’ve walked from one mountain peak to another. From there it’s Civil War (another series I’ve read) and then onto things I haven’t. Might get there before the end of the year!
