If yesterday was all about Fortnite, then today has been about Minecraft.
That’s not strictly true as there was the end of season event tonight in Fortnite which I managed to get into and really enjoyed.
But for the most part, after yesterday’s Fortnite grind, today, I chilled in Minecraft and watched some Netflix as I did so. I love that I have 2 screens and can watch TV and play a game at the same time.
So I watched White Chapel Farm (it’s an old BBC or ITV drama but it’s now on Netflix and I fancied it) while I continued building my roadway.
I have a private SMP with some friends. We divided the world into quarters with a village in the centre and the idea is that we each have unlimited space to build and do whatever we want.
I’ve long had this idea of building this huge railroad. I originally had ideas of us having spawn points hundreds of kms apart and then having to build a railroad to reach each other. but that was difficult to set up so instead we have a central hub and branch out from there.
It had originally intended to be only me and a friend, but other friends joined in. As a result, one of my friends got a mountainous region and has moaned since that they don’t have space to build anything and has been encroaching into the village. Admittedly he’d been building stuff that helps as all but it’s started to feel crowded.
My brother first came up with the idea to move further out. He has a road and a railroad linking back, but by moving further away, it gives space for the village to expand.
I thought this was a good idea. I too have been expanding and a lot of my time in Minecraft has been spent on my road and railroad, exploring different areas.
As for building, I’ve really not done much. I have one area that changes to snow at one point and inspired by Icecrown in Warcraft and Game of Thrones I built a massive wall. It was something easy I could do from the Support Bubble sofa.
But in the back of my head, I want to build a city. It’ll take time but I love the idea of just having something huge built that I can work on for months and years. I’ve seen some of these mega bases Minecrafters make and I’m inspired.
However, finding somewhere for all this is proving a challenge. I’m learning from watching Youtube videos that just having a flat piece of land is boring, but I want something flattish. I might also want a port to my city so I need it next to an ocean, and enough space that I don’t run out of room years down the line and can have various automated farms that are close enough by but don’t really steal space from the city.
And so what’s happened is that I’ve continued to build my road and railroad looking for the perfect area, and there’s always something wrong. Not flat enough area, too small, not next to an ocean. And I find myself getting further and further away.
I like that I am far enough away so that friends will be bored before they start coming to look for my new city, but it becomes a problem when to get back to the main centre is going to take me an hour or more.
However, I think I’ve finally found an area. It’s huge, mostly flat, with ocean access. It’ll need a lot of work, but it has the room to be as massive as I want. I can already see how I could turn one area into a dock and that might be where I start.
I’m 20kms from my friends but I don’t think they are playing currently so I’ll just start working on this in the background, even if I just do a bit every few days or so.
And as boring as making the road and railroad was, I felt incredibly relaxed doing so. So I’ll probably continue that. I’m excited about my new city and I can’t wait to get started.
