I think it’s fair to say that today has been a train wreck of a day. But for once, writing hasn’t been at the heart of the problem. I even got 2000 words done, which for a busy day has been great.
I’d been anticipating a lower-than-normal word count today, mainly due to being busy. I’ve got a few days coming up where things are busier than normal, especially during key writing times. It’s frustrating as I want to get work done, especially as momentum seems to be a thing with this novel. But these things are unavoidable and the trick is going to be being able to weather the storm for a few days.
Today, the two events that scupper my writing time are, firstly, this month’s Pokemon Go PvP tournament, and then, secondly, my weekly raid.
I was quite proud of myself for getting a load of writing done, despite also needing to phone my dad for Father’s Day. I got my 2000 words done and then rushed over to the support bubble sofa for the PvP tournament.
We used to do this in person at a local hall but Covid forced everything online, and for the most part it’s been good. It’s relaxed, fun, and despite losing every battle, I do enjoy it for the couple of hours it lasts.
But we had loads sign up and then never turn up, meaning we only JUST had enough for a tournament, and then some participants, suddenly wanted to drop off half way through (for another tournament as it turned out). It was rude. Organising the event is stressful enough, and it just sent C into a drama spiral as the person’s boyfriend was also there trying to add to the drama, which is not what the event is about.
We got it done, but only just and C’s not doing any more remote tournaments, because it’s work to organise and it stops being fun when people are asses.
On the plus side (or so I thought), the shortened tournament gave me time to jump on the laptop and unlock the Argus zone on my raiding main in World of Warcraft. Now we’ve done the raid on heroic we’ve been doing what we call fun runs – going over old content for achievements. I’ve really enjoyed it as I seem to have loads of gaps in my glory achievements.
The plan had been to do the raid on Argus, and whilst I was sure someone could have summoned me there, I rushed through, trying to forget the train wreck of a PvP tournament and end the day on a high.
Except, numbers were low and so the guild cancelled at the last minute.
So I ended the day without a raid. I did continue to grind fishing on an alt for a time, but that’s so boring, even I got bored, and ended up logging off.
I did, however, manage to get the Warlock tome to drop the other day which changes my character to use green fire instead of the normal red. So I did the quest for that when I got home. It’s quite a big thing, as I’ve had that character since Warcraft first launched. It was just a shame there wasn’t an achievement or title to show for it.
So whilst 2000 words might seem low, it was probably my biggest accomplishment in what has otherwise been a trainwreck of a day.
Tomorrow, I’m helping C with something at lunchtime, so I’m hoping I can punch out some words first thing.
Sometimes, word count isn’t about how much you do, it’s about how much momentum you can maintain.
