It’s Pokemon Go Fest tomorrow and I’m not looking forward to it. I wish I was.
I was reading this thing the other day, talking about World of Warcraft, where it said that developers used to be gamers, and would make their games primarily so players had fun. But, it added, with the rise of social media and big gaming corporations, so there’s been this us vs them mentality that’s developed in a lot of gaming studios.
I feel like that about Niantic.
They are apparently going to have pop up events at the weekend in Bristol. How is that even possible during a pandemic?
When lockdown first happened, Niantic seemed to act very responsibly. They introduced remote raids, increased spin distances, and did a number of other measures that helped players on lockdown.
Then we get to September and the second wave, and they start retracting some of those improvements… just as the second wave started.
And then, sat in a third wave, we have tasks for tomorrow that include walking.
There’s that feeling that the developers are in combat with their players, that everything is done for profit, and they only make changes if pushed. They seem a different company to the one last year.
It’s been one of the reasons I fell out of love with the game a bit. I still dip in for the collection challenges and research, but I’m less worried about the shinies.
And with events like GoFest there’s never a super-increased shiny rate like a community day. It should be a celebration, not a battle. And that’s what it’s going to feel like.
I know not everyone can get everything, but there’s always going to be losers and winners. Why can’t everyone be winners… it’s a celebration not a competition. Let me be clear, I don’t believe in participation medals in competitions… but this isn’t a competition.
And part of me just knows that I’m not going to have a great weekend. I’m sore from yesterday, and whilst I suspect we’ll only go to the local park, if today is anything to go by, I might feel sore just doing that.
I want to be wrong and have a great time, especially when I’m giving up a weekend to do it.
We’ll see though. I’m not trying to be down on the whole event… that way I’ll only end up having a miserable time. Instead, I’m going to try and enjoy it for what it is, and try and have a bit of fun.
And if it all goes bad, well at least I have my raid on Sunday night to look forward to.
