This shouldn’t be funny, but I think I’ve found the most toxic game ever.
My friend Craig put me onto this mobile game he was playing called War of Warship (note the singular).  It’s one of these typical base building games.  You go gather resources, build your base, get so far and “then everything slows down to a crawl unless you use micro-transactions” types of affair.
To be honest, it’s not bad, although a game is always more fun if a friend is playing it.  Like any good mobile game you dip in and out of it.
The problem is the community!
Oh boy, do they redefine the word toxic.
Craig ran into problems with them before I started.  Players can join guilds called ACCs and then wage war on each other to prove who is top dog.  It should be fun and harmless as you wince as someone raids the island you were mining and steals all your resources.
Except the community has to be the most racist, sexist and homophobic I’ve ever encountered.  Playing videogames for a number of years I know what videogame players can be like.  You always get that one person who will say whatever ignorant thing they like because they feel they can get away with it due to the anonymity of the internet.  You can usually just filter it out or at worst, block that player.
War of Warship is most certainly pay to win, and is imbalanced in that the big ACCs get bigger and there’s little you can do to take them down…. Except possibly raid them.
And that would all be fun and good, if it weren’t for the fact that those in these large guilds are on massive power trips.  Essentially, they’ve come up with a whole set of rules for acceptable behaviour which doesn’t revolve about everyone having a pleasant time, but about everyone curtailing to the large ACCs.
To compound this… these rules aren’t posted on some fan page or forum… they just “exist”.
Anyone new comes in gets automatically set upon by members of the large ACCs for not following these rules.  And it’s not polite either.   After asking the question of where I could find these so-called rules, I was automatically sent abusive private messages calling me a bitch (I think they assumed Adrian was a female name) and telling to “STFU”.
Anyone challenges these “rules” or even questions them meets similar abuse.  From physical threats, to the sort of hateful comments that would get you banned on most social media, to getting the entire ACC to raid smaller players’ islands to rob them of all their resources.  And it’s not just one person either.  There’s an entire group, all from large ACCs, doling out some of the most hateful bile I’ve ever seen.  It’s almost impressive.
Of course, threats that they have a powerful ACC and will crush you are just laughable.  Like I’m going to lose sleep over a game.  Even the ones that descend into physical threats are hilarious (like I scare easily.  What are you?  Like 5 years old?).
But at the same time, not everyone is a martial artist with dangerous hobbies and a ridiculously low scare factor.  I’m sure for a lot of people the level of toxicity would put them off what is otherwise a semi-fun game.
It’s so ridiculous and stupid, I’ve actually taken great delight in breaking these so called secret rules (most of which involves publish co-ords of high level players so smaller players can all raid them in an act to try and level the playing field).  Of course, the toxic community has a shitfit about this because it’s not in these agreed rules that aren’t published anywhere.
