Things are slowly returning to normal after Astolat.
It’s been such a big focus for me over the last few months – churning away in the background since Untournament – and now it’s over. Naturally, my attention has turned to future tournaments and how I want to approach them. There’s also been a lot of thought about how I performed.
A lot of this has manifested itself in the way that I want to teach going forwards, and discussing it with people last night, they seem very receptive to that idea.
I’m trying to clear my decks so I can jump back into the editing. I did some work this morning on getting the Wessex League website up and running, did some market research for them in the pub tonight as well.
I have other tasks as well, I’m sure of it. I forget them only to be reminded at some point in the day that they need to be done
I think what I need to do tomorrow is to start to make a list. As I’ve said, I tend to rely heavily on my organisational processes only when things get busy, and whilst I don’t feel particularly busy, I do feel like I have a lot of little tasks I need to get out the way so I can focus on editing.
I did do some prep work for that today, going through my current ToDo list and making sure that I had all the outstanding tasks cleared off. Tomorrow I can begin populating the list with the tasks I still have remaining.
Today was also the last day on the 4 week block on tournament fighting that I’ve been running. It’s been surprisingly successful. Tonight was an elimination match and somehow it all worked perfectly. I was really impressed with the level of fighting. Everyone seemed to be giving it their all and there were some really great matches. It was like Astolat all over again. I gave out medals to the winners of the league, and there were a few shocks. I feel bad that one guy who did extremely well missed out on the league due to poor performance tonight, but disappointment happens.
Tomorrow I have Cake Club. We’re going to be looking at some tech we need to enact some of our plans. I’ve done no prep and doubt I’ll have time to do any before then. But Kate says that is fine so I don’t feel too bad. I know what we need to do, I just need to set up my laptop to be able to do it.
It’ll be a nice way to ease myself back into the writing. My 10 day tournament break feels so much longer. It’s very easy to think that as I pass one milestone, I go straight into the next but the truth is that everything is a bit more complex than that.
My work for doing well at Swordfish this year began months ago, Astolat being just a stage towards that. Likewise, the edits (other than my break to focus on Astolat) have been ongoing as well.
The trick is to let them all to continue to progress, some taking precedence over others at times. The danger is that some tasks can get forgotten unless you track them properly. There’s also the danger of frustration when you’re progressing so slowly it’s difficult to see how far you’ve come.
This is where something like The Climb can be so useful. Day to day, it doesn’t change much, but long term you can see that I’m in a very different position to where I was back in issue #1
