Stuck Indoors – The Climb #168

Saturday 8^th July 2017

I’ve been in a bit of a bad mood today.
Aside from everything else that’s been going on over the last few days, I’ve been in a bit annoyed. You see, it’s summer outside… the weather is fantastic. I should be going to the beach and eating ice cream, especially given that I am not on call with the day job this weekend. I should be getting vitamin D and getting sunburnt and complaining that it’s too hot.
Instead, I have been stuck inside editing. And not easy editing either. This stuff is hard. And I’ve not made as much progress as I would like as I come to a passge that my gut tells me isn’t right and I don’t immediately know how to fix it.
Now keep in mind that if I wanted to go to the beach, I could. Nothing is stopping me. No mystical force is making me do these edits. I am freely choosing to do these, to sit there and read the words aloud.
But even the Pims I bought to keep me company isn’t helping.
I’ve tried to take breaks, doing things inside World of Warcraft to take my brain away from the bit I’m stuck on so I can come back afresh. I just wish I could plough through these things instead of getting sidetracked for what usually proves to be a very simple fix.
So I’m about 5 chapters in now, when I wanted to be 10. And I’m restless and annoyed. This isn’t because of the text itself. I’m actually quite pleased with how everything is turning out but I’m just feeling very surly today.
I sent the first 3 chapters off to a couple of people today to see if they made sense. My beta reader proved an absolute star and came back within a couple of hours (because she is amazing!) and I was quite pleased when she didn’t see anything major.
I really do find I’m fine turning now, that the comments now are as much about people’s personal taste as they are about structural issues.
I think I’m happy with what I’ve read. The biggest problem I’ve encountered so far is that cutting so much has resulted in some conversations not flowing. My current sticking point is relating to a conversation where one character is talking about the Grand Duke’s Army and the villain is talking about a mercenary army. Now I’m sure it’s a very easy fix to transition from one to the other, but for the life of me, I can’t think of the solution right now.
So, instead of stressing over these mini-fires, I’ve been taking a break and playing World of Warcraft. I still need to do loads of Legion dungeons but instead I’ve been solo running old dungeons, getting a couple of new achievements in the process.
I’m not sure why I’m not running the Legion dungeons. After all what’s the worst that can happen? They kick me. It’s not like I haven’t tanked some of these dungeons already. But I’m still feeling low from the panic attack on Wednesday night and so really could do without the stress. Plus, soloing dungeons is fun. I’ve picked up some new battle pets even if I haven’t had any new mounts drop.
So, I end the day feeling surly at making little progress on a day I could have gone and done stuff. I’ve got training tomorrow, although I’m tempted not to go for a couple of reasons.
I’ll see how I am tomorrow!
