After a terrible week, today I started to find a bit of my mojo today.
Driving to sparring this morning I found myself getting fired up for the first time in over a week. It probably makes sense, given that I’ve found that it takes me a week to 10 days to recover from a tournament and this would be inside that timeframe.
I still didn’t feel I fenced well. There were just a few of us there today yet I still only found time to fence everyone once. The time wasn’t wasted though as Fran and I came up with a 5 week introduction to rapier course whilst just chatting. As you do.
It also looks like I’ll be teaching it in January which will be fun as I really think I’ll be good teaching rapier given that it’s my primary weapon. Although, given that this week saw me actually drop in the rankings, perhaps I would be better sticking to sword & buckler. At least that ranking has gone up.
Still, I’m hoping that my fencing will improve before the final Wessex tournament on Saturday. I need to find some more energy without overdoing it and just becoming a bouncy target.
My friend came round again tonight and we watched some Netflix. We took a random chance on a new series on there called Dark. It’s German and dubbed so we initially thought we’d made a big mistake but it’s actually really good and although we’re only 3 episodes in, we’re really into it.
I’ve also decided that I want to write a script. I’m not entirely sure why. Perhaps it’s just to do something different from a novel, although I’m sure I’d be better suited to a short story than a film script. But I’ve done short stories before and getting some practical experience in writing scripts might be a good idea.
I’d told my friend Jack on Friday night that I had no idea how to get into scriptwriting and he gave me some really helpful pointers. It’s not that I believe that I’m going to write some Oscar-winning script. It’s just that it would be nice to know what to do and get some of the legwork done now so that if the opportunity ever arises in the future I’ve had the necessary experience.
I do wonder if this is somehow procrastination from editing book 2, although I did a bit more work on it today. I’m hoping that once all the tournaments are out the way, I can start putting some serious focus into it. Far from finding all this television-watching distracting, I’m actually finding it’s helping boost my creativity.
So despite all the distractions, I’m finding I’m feeling a bit more fired up than I did last week. Of course, it’s probable that next week after the London tournament that I’m going to feel mentally exhausted once again. But that will be my last tournament for a while, which should mean I can get a bit more focus on my writing for a couple of months.
