I’m thinking that I need to do some Twitch streaming.
Whilst there’s a large part of me that feels streaming is probably more of a job than it looks, I think it’s a good way to practise public speaking. I don’t believe I’m particularly bad. I did drama as a kid and know how to project my voice. I’ve done a bunch of conventions.
But I’m seeing the rise of Authortube. Sanderson has started doing it heavily, and I’ve seen a few authors copy this, including a few friends.
What’s annoying is that I could see this coming. I’ve done a lot of reading on digital marketing over the past few years and have come up with a number of author strategies. Heck, The Climb was one of them, and look how old that is now.
Obviously, a lot of my social media marketing plans don’t really kick into effect until such time as I have a book deal. The Climb is all about creating that legacy, and hence why it made sense to do it now. Other things needed to wait until I had gained the authority to be able to speak about them.
In short, my strategy is pretty much solely The Climb until such time as I have things being traditionally published.
But, with the rise of Authortube, it’s like part of my plans have been validated. This is the right direction, but I have to be patient. Everything has to happen at the right time. I hope I’m right.
One thing that has been clear is that some authors are better at talking to camera than others. As I said, I don’t think I’m bad, but I think I could be better. And that’s where Twitch comes in.
You have some streamers who are very comfortable on screen. They talk as if they are chatting to a friend yet manage to engage with and include their audience. Others – especially those who start out – trip over their words and are not sure what to say. At this stage, I can almost know what I can expect in terms of presentation value – and by that I mean the streamer’s skill at presenting rather than flash pop ups and alerts – given the number of viewers.
I’m thinking that Twitch would be the ideal way to practise those skills. I umm and arr a lot and I think this would be good practise not to.
I may be some way off ever doing Authortube but I saw this coming and I want to be ready when I feel it’s appropriate for me to jump in, so perhaps that means a bit of practise now.
