Things are slow in publishing, until they are not.  And then they’ll be slow again.

As a writer you come to accept that the industry acts in bursts of activity.

It looks like the feedback for the latest rewrite is going to be due back this weekend.  I was told I’d probably get it back this week, but promises get made with the best of intentions and then life happens.

But the person I’m hearing back from is super-reliable and I’m excited.

Ordinarily I’d be nervous.  All too often I do a rewrite only for further edits to be required, but there was something about this rewrite.

From discussion document to feedback is going to be a month, and that’s never happened before.  I certainly didn’t rush this rewrite, and yet it just all seemed to come together.

I take this as a good sign.

Of course, I do worry – like any writer would – that I’ve been so blinded by the effortlessness of the edit that I don’t see the real issues.  Every so often, a facet of the novel will crop into my head with a thought that perhaps there’s something fundamentally wrong with it.

I’ve even gone so far as to panic that I might have forgotten major edits, only to find myself then going into Scrivener to double check I actually fixed them.

So whilst I’d be a fool not to steel myself to the possibility that the rewrite has some major flaws I’ve overlooked, there’s a quiet confidence underlying this that tells me that the effortlessness of it all is a sign.

We’ll see… in 24 hours.
