Today’s been another hot day but at least we got a hint of rain and thunder.
I’ve been busy trying to avoid the heat, as once it hits afternoon and the sun shifts round, my office becomes a Finnish sauna. As a result, the writing related activities I’d normally during my evenings get put off in favour of not melting.
I did get some early feedback on a project today but I’ll save talking about that for a while.
However, it has me once again looking at my projects and reassigning priorities. The main piece of work I want to do now (but have been stopped by the heat) is to reorganise a draft of an old novel to give it chapters and structure.
But I also want to launch a newsletter in the next couple of months. I’ve got a unique idea for it that I hope everyone will love. However, it does require me to set up some preparatory work. It’s going to be a fun little project but the downside is that it’s going to be very time sensitive.
I think that perhaps I have time to do the novel reorganisation before I really need to do the newsletter work. The idea behind the reorganisation was that, this is much more an administrative job than a creative one, and so if I did need to abandon it only half done, that wouldn’t be a problem.
Whilst there’s part of me that hates I seem to constantly flit between projects this year, I think that flexibility has put me in good stead. During a pandemic I’ve managed to do a rewrite, numerous outlines and level up my skills. At no time during Lockdown did I feel I was being super-productive. At best I was managing to get stuff done. At worst, I was changing projects quicker that the direction of the wind.
By being able to constantly adjust I was able to swap projects in and out based on priority. As much as I might be willing to criticise myself for the flitting between projects, I got the important stuff done quicker than I ever have before. That has to count for something.
Plus, even if I do get half way through reorganising the old draft before having to switch to something new, it’s still half less work to do in the future. Hopefully, it’ll be cooler the next couple of days and that will allow me to make some progress on it or even get it complete so it’s off my slate for good.
