As I’ve said, I’ve been playing a load of Warcraft in the last week. With the release of the pre-patch and the associated level squish now was a great time to start leveling alts.
This is all investment.
I have enough characters to be able to actually play. Heck, you don’t really need more than one character.
I even have enough for one of every class and profession. I suspect that if I wanted to achieve everything possible in the game, I already have enough characters to do every story arc. So why more?
I’ve found in the last year that old content runs – specifically old raids – was a good gold-maker for me. Most raids are locked out to a single run per difficulty per character per week. Back at the start of lockdown, I ran old raids with my then assortment of max level characters and made about 250k.
Raid raw gold has been nerfed but they still hold things like rare mounts. So having a bank of characters I could just throw at old content if I wanted isn’t a bad idea.
I’ve been working on a bank of characters.
The first thing I did was use chromie time to take them to Draenor. Things are a little too up in the air with gold making to know for sure, but Garrisons can be a nice steady income. Most of my new characters are plate wearers and dual gatherers so profession buildings might be of little use… but even if they use the herb garden to help my inscriptionist, it could be useful.
So I took them all through WoD until they had their garrison, rotating through them to allow resources to build enough to get them a level 2 garrison.
I’ve then taken characters different ways.
The original idea was to play one character until I’d burnt through their rested XP and then rotate – resting that one to regained rested XP whilst I play another – but I’ve found myself working on a set few characters.
I had a paladin that was around 112 before the level squish, so just getting them their garrison leveled them to the new max of 50. I then have some old alts that were stuck around the old level of 80.
I took the rogue through Legion so I could do the rogue order hall campaign, and have taken them through Azuna and Val’sharah before sending them into Suramar for the last few levels.
Like wise my Monk has also done Legion. For variety, I sent them to Stormheim first before heading to Highmountain. I’m loving the order hall story but I’m feeling a bit guilty that I never took them through Pandaria for the story high notes to really resonate. As a result I have another monk I’m starting to take through Pandaria. They’re low 20s so it will take them a while to level.
I also created a new Demon Hunter this past week. It was more to see whether you could have more than one per server now. Their name was pretty cool so I kept them and have leveled them through WoD to the point where they are now in Spires of Arak and only three levels off 50.
There’s still a load more to do, and to be honest, given the creativity boost I’ve been getting, I’ll probably continue, although the Rogue, Paladin and Monk were my main aim.
The real challenge is trying to find different content to do so I keep my game play varied. I reckon the next batch of characters I level will be going to Zandalar or seeing the Lich King.
Of course, even after I level all the characters, I’ll still need to level them another 10 levels when Shadowlands launches. Oh well, it’ll keep me busy during the winter months.
