Wednesday 30th December 2020

Wednesday is the EU reset day in World of Warcraft.  It means it’s the day when weekly lockouts reset and new quests go live.

The big progress system in Shadowlands is Renown, and it seems that each week since the expansion’s launch there has been 3 renown up for grabs.  One you get for doing a weekly quest to gather 1000 anima – a reward for some worldquests and killing dungeon bosses.  Another you get for releasing 10 souls from the Maw (It used to be 5 but it got boosted last week as those souls are needed to unlock certain advances in your covenant).  And then as a reward for completing those two you unlock a new story quest.

The idea is that all this can be done over the week.  There’s even catch up mechanisms if you miss one week.

But because I have lots to do in Warcraft – and because I want to get the new shiny stuff out the way so I can then focus on the more boring grindy stuff and intersperse it with my writing work – I try to have a Warcraft Wednesday and just get it all done for the week.  That way, I’m ready for the raid come Sunday (and now Tuesday) and hopefully not going to be distracted from writing work.

That’s the plan anyway.

I’ve decided that I only really want to remain ‘current’ with 2 characters – my horde main, and my alliance raiding alt.  All the others can catch up when I have time.  So you’d think that would be pretty quick, but it seemed to take me all day.

I deliberately save any big Anima worldquests to reset if I can.  There’s been a elite quest awarding 250 anima that I waited for today to complete (although strangely only on my main) as well as a world boss with each reset.  However, the rest are a bit of a battle and anima worldquests seem few and far between.

Then there’s the Maw.  There are weekly quests there which this week, I largely ignored.  I did one as it took me to the same area as my weekly renown quest but I’d built up enough threat with The Jailer by then that I really didn’t want to risk taking it higher and risk dying (and losing stygia I’d gathered to pay for any unlocks you get with the new reputation level).

The story quest was good this week and what I like about these campaign quest unlocks is that they don’t feel like a token quest.  There’s an actual story with a number of mini-quest hubs as the story progresses.

The other thing that the weekly reset brings is gear.  Because I raided last week, I got a weekly reward for a high ilevel piece of gear.  I’d even done LFR on my main so I got one on that character too.  There’s also the chance of getting a piece of gear from the world boss.  And there’s a weekly quest this week to do 5 old dungeons for another piece.

Maybe I’ve progressed a lot with my characters, although I don’t think their ilevel is particularly high, but all the loot I did get were for slots I already have good gear in.

I’m slightly disappointed in that.  My idea with Warcraft Wednesday is to get all the weekly quests done and gain all the rewards so I’m ready to raid on Sunday… but I don’t feel other than moving my renown up, I’ve really got anything to show for all the work I put in today.

I still have the 5 old dungeons to do on my main, despite playing most of the day.  I’ll try and fit those in tomorrow, although the idea behind Warcraft Wednesday is that I get these things done so I’m free the rest of the week.
