Tuesday 29th December 2020

One of my goals in 2020 that really never got completed was to write a script.  I wanted to diversify my writing by looking at other formats, not because I wanted to switch from novel writing but because I thought it would help round me out as a writer.  It would also give me more opportunities if I were to go professional.

I’m fully aware that whilst a lot of skills surrounding character and structure are similar when it comes to screenwriting, they are not the same.  And that means I need to get a bit of practise in and be crap at it.  My plan for 2020 was to write script at the end of the year and turn out something that would be a bit crap but give me a ton of experience.

I was fine with that and had wanted to do a script with a friend of mine, but when the time came, they weren’t wanting to do it… so it never got done.

I found a few scriptwriting opportunities, but by the time I had, their submission windows had passed.  I’d vowed as long ago as last April, that I would submit something next year.  It probably wouldn’t be accepted but my aim was that by the time I did, I’d have enough experience that what I did send was decent.

So going into 2021, the plan was that the script I didn’t write last quarter would be written in Q1 2021 as a submission for this opportunity.

EXCEPT THEY MOVED THE DATE FORWARD!

So there I am, today, doing my 2021 planning.  I better look up the deadline if they’ve published it yet, I tell myself, so I can start adding that into my writing project planning.  So I look and find it’s currently open and has a deadline of the end of next week.

Shit!  Can I write a TV script in a week?

Luckily, I’ve had a concept for such a script for a while and have been gathering ideas.  I also did something probably 10 years back that was very similar and it seemed to make it quite far despite not knowing a lot about screenwriting.  So I’m hopeful that a bit of study on Final Draft during 2020 coupled with lessons learnt from novel writing plus this experience from 10 years ago will allow me to turn out something decent.

The plan is to gather ideas and read a few old scripts over the next few days and start trying to construct something over the weekend.

It’ll mean I’ll hit 2021 running working on both a novel and a script at the same time.  But I can’t lie… I kinda like that.
