Sunday 27th December 2020

I’ve been pretty bad at posting The Climb of late.  A lot of this has been to do with breaks.

I took several weeks off for the Shadowlands launch in World of Warcraft.  I don’t regret it.  I needed that break as it was my only ‘holiday’ all year and in an otherwise pretty depressive year it was my one time to just forget and go somewhere else, even if that somewhere else was somewhere virtual.

But it meant that whilst I took some notes, I did not start each day with writing up the previous day.

Likewise as Xmas has seemed ridiculously busy for such a small affair, I find myself getting behind.

Of course, when I come back, there’s a bunch of notes to write up, images to create and HTML to post.

The problem is that I rush it.  The Climb is always intended to be pretty raw.  It’s about the day to day.  It’s about seeing something half mentioned one day grow over time into a… thing.  It’s to show progress (hence the name).

But there are times when I don’t feel like I’m progressing; times I feel I’m treading water and have nothing to say.  Perhaps those will prove the most insightful posts in years ahead.

And because I do these before doing other work, there’s always this sense that I need to get The Climb out.  That helps create some of the rawness of it, but at the same time, I feel the quality can sometimes suffer if I’m in a  rush or trying to catch up.

There’s also something else I’ve noticed.

If I’m behind I’ll do a big push. I’ll write up the notes from several days, and over the course of a week, catch up the fortnight or so I’m behind.  But it comes at the expense of other writing.  It’s great that I wrote 4000 words today… but how many of them were actual fiction?

Couple with other projects and my 2021 plan I’ve come to the realisation that my fiction has to take priority.  All too often The Climb can feel like a barrier to work rather than a warm up.

Perhaps I can be better at making sure I post each day, but it’s also possible that I might leave it to later in the day until after I’ve written some fiction.

I don’t want to stop it, that’s for certain.  If it serves no other purpose, it’s a little motivation to do something so I have something to write about tomorrow.  That’s difficult during a lockdown or holidays.  I’ve done a ton of World of Warcraft posts lately, but this is primarily a writing blog not a gaming one and I worry it sometimes loses focus.

I have a plan so I have ideas for content on any given day:  Monday for productivity, Tuesday for HEMA, Warcraft Wednesday, etc. but that should always come in the rare instance of no writing progress.

Going forward, whilst to the reader the Climb will still happen and possibly be more regularly posted than it has been in 2020, it’s going to become a lower priority in my daily tasks.  I think I’ll feel better for that.

I just need to get through this Xmas backlog of posts first.
