I’m a bad patient. By all rights what I should be doing is enjoying the rest. I’ve had a tough couple of weeks mentally and have no projects outstanding. The sensible thing to do would be to rest, to gather my mental energy and just consume media ready for the next project.
But, I hate rest. I feel the constant tick of mortality and think of all the things I’m yet to do. And so I get restless.
I tried to combat this today by multi-tasking: watching TV whilst I glued more Shadows of Brimstone stuff together. But I quickly ran out of glue… and got caught up on Star Trek Discovery. I picked Peaky Blinders back up because Craig’s been watching it and I knew that it’s something we won’t watch together when he next comes round for tea. I watched part of the first season for inspiration last year when I was trying to come up with ideas for the Sans gangs in my novels but I only got 4 or so episodes into the first season, so I finished the season off.
I even played a bit of Warcraft which I’ve not done this year. That’s usually a good way to sink time and lose myself. Heck, when I’ve not been feeling myself, it’s been positively helpful to lose myself into the world of Azeroth.
But I’m still restless and soon got bored.
I even went to Morrison’s hoping that the Amazon package I was waiting for had arrived. It hadn’t, only for me to get the delivery notice as soon as I got back in through my front door.
I had considered going to the gym at midnight. I quite enjoyed doing that when I did it on Sunday but the trip to Morrisons had demonstrated how bitter it was outside… so I decided to delay it until tomorrow. I’ll go pick up my parcel, go into town and pick up some glue and then go to the gym. It sounds like a perfect plan.
And somewhere, whirling in the background are my thoughts on book 3. I’m not specifically thinking about the book but I’m starting to consider which characters I want in the novel. I’m re-reading Grave Peril and one of the things I like about the Dresden book is how the sidekicks get mi and matched each book. I’d very much like that in the Shade Knight series and so I’m thinking which characters I’ll have.
I also got to chat to a couple of writer friends. One has just got a book commission and has probably got their break. Another has, like just about everyone I know, had a wobbly week this week but is spinning off their ideas in new and original directions. That’s the way it goes sometimes: You start with the idea of spacefaring dinosaurs and end up with a political historical romance. All you can do is pull on the various threads of ideas and see where they take you.
That’s where I currently am with book 3, just ideas. Soon I’ll start to create a plot, but probably not until I hear back from my beta on book 2.
