Blogging just seems to be one of those things that has got away from me this year. Whilst I’ve sometimes taken the lazy man’s option of posting an image to Instagram, I’ve not been as good as I was last year with monthly updates. Ironically, it’s because I’ve been so busy that I’ve not been updating. I need to give the website a bit of an overhaul and every time I look at it, I just come up with a list of 101 things I need to do when I find the time.
However, I’m planning on changing the lack of updates for the last third of the year.
So a quick update on a few things for August
I did a quick blog last month about how rewriting has been a skill I’ve really needed to learn over the last year. But after a wobble back in February, I’m actually getting to grips with this second rewrite. Over the last month I’ve really challenged myself to not only write things that are good but, if needed, rip out and write something better, tighter. I’m really happy with my progress and enjoying rewriting.
This has been my other great challenge of the year, and I’ve not only passed the initial years-long goal I’ve had for myself but am now closely approaching my second goal. Weight has dropped to a low I don’t think I’ve seen in adult-life and now my diet is well on the way to being improved, muscle mass has returned. I’m easily in the best condition of my life but I’ve still got a little way to go yet.
Some foods still proves a problem for me (thanks Leggedon tablets) but with everything else going well it’s just a matter of letting things follow their course and staying strict with the diet (again, thanks to Leggedon tablets this really isn’t an issue).
I’ve had a couple of tournaments recently. I competed in Astolat in the single rapier, as well as sword & buckler competition. I was mainly focused on my single rapier and came away a bit disappointed. If the pools stage had been based on overall points rather than number of wins, I would have come out ahead of the Nordic league champion, but I knew that going in so getting knocked out bothered me a lot. I wasn’t expecting a lot from my sword & buckler (mainly because I’d not been focusing on it) and it showed.
After the mental setback, I had about 3 weeks to get ready for my next tournament, Fightcamp – currently considered the closest thing to a UK national championship. I had a tough pool for single rapier and although I never made it through, I was happier with my fencing. In the Synthetic Mixed Weapons (where I fought sword & buckler) I had some great fights, including one where I annihilated the person who’d won the longsword the day before, but I wasn’t aggressive enough going up against the majority of the longsworders in my group and as a result their extended reach got me time and time again. I was also part of the team Melee and we made it as far as the semi-finals (I think). It was more a bit of fun than anything serious but I’ve been impressed how the pictures of me from the event showed good form in my sword & buckler.
I’m going to be at Fantasycon later this month where I will be taking part in a panel. More details on that soon as I plan to do a blog post on it! Then next month I’ll also be attending Bristolcon although I’m not sure if I’ll be doing anything there yet or not. Details as I find out!
Another item I’m planning to do a specific blog post about is thatI have a short story coming out in an anthology. Again, look for a blog post about this.
Reading has been a bit sporadic this last month but I’ve slowly been reading Nevernight by Jay Kristoff and absolutely loving it. I’ve also been trying to keep up with Marvel’s Civil War II comic series
The latest World of Warcraft expansion, Legion, launched this past week so this month has been filled with pre-release invasion events (to level up a number of characters – I took one from 1 -99 in about 3 days). Last week I took time off the writing to level up the new content. I felt a bit guilty but I have been working very hard so deserved a break. I’ve only got one character to 110 so far, but I have to say I’m loving Blood Death Knight. And I’ve actually started tanking 5-mans outside of 100% raid groups only to find I’m actually enjoying it this expansion. My other toons will get levelled up in between writing sessions over the coming weeks and months, although I’d like to start raiding again.
Television / Movies
Like everyone else, I watched Stranger Things and loved it. I also finished my marathon watching of Masterchef Australia. There were a few movies I rewatched as well, including Nolan’s Batman trilogy
So August was pretty busy and went pretty well. I’m hoping that September proves just as fruitful.
