This year has been rubbish for me for Geocaching. 2011 was pretty good despite a lot going on in my personal life with 3812 caches found. Prior to that I’d averaged around 2000 a year.
But this year, I’ve done just 500 in the first six months of this year, and for me, that’s abysmal.
It’s not that I’ve fallen out of love with the hobby. It’s just a combination of new job with out of hours support, moving and then twisting my spine due to the move, has meant that I’ve long since written off the year as a big numbers year.

And yet I have my 10,000th find looming and I want to do something special for it. Normally I don’t bother. It’s too much hassle co-ordinating your caching days to ensure THAT cache is THAT find, especially when all it takes is 1 DNF to throw everything off. But 10,000 IS a big deal. It’s a huge milestone and it makes sense to do something for it.
With my back meaning that even a walk round the shops is agony, slowing my finds right down so my 10,000th is a specific cache is not an issue. It’s probably doing me some good to rest the back from the normal 15 mile hikes to allow it time to heal (not that I can do 15 miles at the moment, 5 miles almost killed me last week!).
I have about 80 caches to do in the next few weeks and then I’m going to embark on something particularly epic for my 10k. It’s a challenge but one that will be doable even if my back isn’t better. Props are being made and I really need to get on with making the T-Shirts. It’s all top secret but should be a lot of fun.
I’m excited about it, which is good as my lower back pain has been overshadowing my fun at caching lately. Now things are starting to settle down I really want to start getting my numbers back up. However, I won’t be able to do that for a few weeks yet until after I hit 10k. I just hope my back will be better by then!
